24 Jun 1956 - 02 Oct 2019
Sylvia was born to Constancio & Ernestina (Veytia) Benavides 24 June 1956 in Saint Louis, Missouri. She was named after a 1930's actress Sylvia Sydney. She grew up in various parts of Saint Louis as a child, until her family moved to East Los Angeles, CA in 1967 at age 11. She graduated from Garfield High School and started attending classes at East Los Angeles College. She married David Gomer 12 June 1976 in Montebello, CA and became a military spouse following her husbands Coast Guard career to numerous locations for 26 years. She was a mother to two sons, Micheal Gomer 17 Nov 1977 and Kevin Gomer 28 Sept 1986. She furthered her education graduating from Belvard College, FL with an Associates degree and then a Bachelor degree from University of Central Oklahoma. She became a Civilian Federal Employee and retired after 22+ years of service Feb 2017. She accomplished all of this, having a hereditary medical condition called Alports Syndrome, which affects kidneys, eyes and hearing. She survived 3 kidney transplants, years of kidney dialysis, several eye surgeries and used special hearing aids. In later years she developed diabetes, pulmonary fibrosis, aorta heart valve problems, calcified arteries/veins and high blood pressure. She strove to live her life as close as possible to a healthy normal person. She was an inspiration of hope to others, struggling with medical problems in their life. She's survived by her; husband David Gomer; son Kevin Gomer; brothers Jorge and Marcus Veytia; sisters Carmen Yniges-Rust, Sonya Yniges and Yolanda Yniges-Veitia. She's proceeded by both her parents; brother Ricardo Benavides; and son Micheal Gomer. She is interned in Riverside National Cemetery with her son Micheal.
