With joy and grief, we announce that Lorene Elizabeth (Johansen) Bancroft had a glorious reunion with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and family members who preceded her, on September 4, 2019. She passed into her heavenly home from her earthly home in Murrieta, California. Lorene was born August 8, 1929 to Gustav and Lucille (Fletcher) Johansen in Kerman, California.
Lorene spent most of her childhood in Chefoo, China, where her parents were missionaries with the Assemblies of God Missions. Her grandparents, George and Hattie Mae Fletcher, whom she adored, were a significant part of her childhood when her parents were home in the states on furlough. In 1939 Lorene returned to the United States with her mother Lucille and older sister Helen. She grieved the passing of her beloved father, Gustav, who died in China in 1942. Lorene married the love of her life, Varney Mason Bancroft, in 1946. They had four daughters, Orlene Mae, Rozellen Elizabeth, Beverly Lynn, and Annette Robin. God and family were of most importance to Lorene. She taught Sunday School, Good News Club, and worked in the AWANA program with various churches over the years. Lorene was known for her baking and cooking (including her famous overnight rolls which she took to church functions); her love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and her love of sweets (including her famous bag of candy she would share at church).
Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, Gustav and Lucille (Fletcher) Johansen, her sister Helen (Johansen) Lamb, her beloved husband of 70 years, Varney Mason Bancroft, and her daughter Annette Robin. She is survived by her daughters Orlene Mae, Rozellen Elizabeth, Beverly Lynn; her 13 grandchildren, Kristi, Randy, Bryan, Marianne, Trisha, Michelle, Darcy, Ryan, LeeAnn, Nicole, Adrianna, and Mariette, 32 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Murrieta Valley Funeral Home on September 13, 2019 at 11:00 AM. Internment will follow at Riverside National Cemetery at 1:30 PM.
